The multiple layering of analogue and digital print processes combined with autographic mark making, as is evident in the the midweek recall series of prints, are intended to remove and selectively readd information to the initial almost instantaneous recording, carried out using polaroid photography and pencil notes. This layering, perhaps, offering a comment on the way memory changes every time it is re-remembered. Intrinsic to each work is the use of deliberately obscured, barely visible text, where occasionally a disconnected phrase is apparent. The works themselves appear still and quiet, giving the veneer of calm, even if the text reveals something different.

Samples of text and macro images of ground recorded daily in 2022 form the basis of this body of work developed during Vanessa’s residency. While working on a series of prints Wallace opted to limit herself to one font and used ink mixed to replicate that of a graphite pencil, selecting phases that lose meaning when removed from the original text. UV printing was employed to print text in white ink onto cream paper to form an occasional visible surface difficult to read and paired with duotone images constructed by sampling two prominent colours within the original photographs of ground. All these actions seek to remove and reinterpret the initial recording perhaps commenting on the way memory changes every time it is re-remembered.

The Bunny Tree series focuses on the act of travelling to and from school, on each walk, there and back, one close up image of the ground was taken. These works are in part a collaboration with my daughter. Her participation comes through the naming of the series of work and participating in the walks. We have acknowledged the importance for her to remain anonymous while retaining her own sense of agency.
The Bunny Tree series text knits together every photograph’s time stamp with the boundary areas of schools.
